Chapter 89 - Fly Away

Tuesday  - Traffic is moving at a quick pace, no accidents in sight.  The rain is starting to fall.  Shoot, it doesn’t appear the windshield wipers are working properly.  Something is obstructing my view.  Never mind – it’s just the venetian blind on Mike’s living room window.  Sandy has not yet arrived.

Around 4:00 PM, Sandy arrives and we are finally on the road.  Rush hour traffic has begun and we are smack dab in the middle of it.  We drive 96 miles and arrive in Ocala, Florida where Sandy decides we need to call it a night so we can check into a motel and find out who is being eliminated on the Voice.   If we average a 100 miles a day, we may make it home for Memorial Day weekend.

Wednesday -  The very first task of the day is to reorganize the car and trunk.  Really, so far we have driven 96 miles.  How unorganized could it possibly be?  Apparently, very unorganized because everything had to come out and put back in the vehicle; in much the same manner, I might add, as it was removed.   The first stop is ½ mile away from where we started with the purpose of getting snacks for the road.  Snacks for the Road!  Sounds like the start of a limerick.  Even I, the Queen of Snacks, can’t justify a snack, at this point.  Don’t you actually have to travel down the road to earn a snack along the way.  Sitting in the parking lot shouldn’t qualify you for anything.   At this point, I would just like to see the sign that states we are leaving Florida.  We are not making much headway in accomplishing that goal.   On the upside, we have not wasted anytime stopping for gas.  That’s because the gas tank still shows we have ¾ of a tank.  That seems quite  amazing for two days of travel, but then again,  there’s that 96 miles issue.

We are down for the count.  It’s 8:37 pm and we are just outside of West Columbus, South Carolina.   It wasn’t exactly where we planned on ending for the day but sometimes, the road turns and we don’t.

It is really easy, as the trees are whipping by, to let your mind wander.  I have compiled a short list of tips that you might want to embrace during your future road trips.

1.     It’s quite possible, while you are driving down that highway of life, there will come a point when the only intelligent conversation taking place is the one between you and Siri.

2.    Garmin directions are not always correct, however, it will get you somewhere faster than two feisty, little old women from Minnesota trying to wing it on their own.

3.    I have never had more respect for Delta Airlines than I do at this moment.

4.    There are not enough four letter words in the English language.  However, the more four letter words you use, the less effective they seem to become.

5.    You might find yourself quietly singing to yourself, “Come fly with me, come fly away!”

6.    The prettiest sites you are going to see are the signs that say, “International Airport, next right!”

7.     Don’t accept everything at face value – Humpty Dumpty was pushed.

8.    I believe some crimes are justifiable.
